I don’t know about you, but as much as I love blogging, there are times when I just don’t have any oomph. Sometimes it’s difficult to think of enough new ideas for the five to seven blogs where I post regularly, and the others where I post occasionally. But no matter how I feel, I need to be creative and come up with new ideas to fill that page or post. Here are some of the strategies I use to recharge my blogging batteries without going online.

Getting Away From It All

Sometimes the lack of ideas is all about tiredness. As a web content writer I spend a lot of time in front of the screen. Sometimes it helps to get away for a while and go to the gym or take a walk. Fresh air and exercise occupy my brain with something other than the screen, leaving room for those fleeting subconscious thoughts to become full fledged ideas.

Offline Media

One of the things I learned as a journalist is that each form of media trawls the others in search of story ideas. Why should blogging be any different. It’s amazing how many ideas you can gain simply by reading a novel, listening to the radio or watching TV. As an example, the other day I was watching an interview with Michael Caine where he told a story about word origins that led me to do a post on etymology.

Find Someone To Talk To

Talking to other people is a good way to stimulate creative energy. Sometimes it’s good to step out of your comfort zone and try to explain what you do to someone who doesn’t understand it. I can guarantee that this will spark a few post ideas. If you’ve ever tried to explain blogging or social networking then you will know what I mean.

These are three methods that have worked for me when the creative well has run dry. What are your tips for getting the zest back?

Going off life is a great way to charge batteries. Sometimes all the blogs and chatrooms and sites and services start running together and bcoming a blur.

A good magazine or newspaper article not only reminds me that EVERYTHING isn’t on line, but that the traditional writing styles are still exciting.

    Great post, Sharon!

Thanks, Malcolm. I bet that’s an issue you face, being the prolific writer that you are. Although I love blogging, I love to read printed material - mostly books, but sometimes other stuff. In fact, that could be a whole other post. ;)
