I love Twitter, but one feature that could be improved is follower management. To manage your followers in Twitter, you navigate to the follower page, but once there it’s not easy to find the people who followed you most recently and decide whether you want to follow them back. In fact, as far as I know, your Twitter followers aren’t even listed in order of the date they followed you, but by the date they joined Twitter, which is worse than useless, in my opinion. That’s why it makes sense to try out some tools for managing Twitter followers. Here are a few that I have tested.

SocialToo

I originally signed up for SocialToo because it gave me a daily digest of followers and unfollowers, allowing me to manage my interaction from one handy place and delete all those Twitter email notifications. SocialToo also allows you to auto follow those who follow you and manage notifications. All of these are now premium services, while you can still turn off auto DMs and set unfollowing preferences for free.

Tweetsum

Tweetsum’s slogan is ‘digest your followers’ and it makes follower management easy from a single page interface. Just login with your Twitter credentials to see a list of new followers and people you are following. Drag those you no longer wish to follow or wish to ignore to the ‘meh’ column and you’re done.  The killer feature is the information button, which tells you more about the person and loads their last five tweets. My only niggle is that it only loads a small selection of your followers for you to manage.

Tweepular

Visiting Tweepular is like opening a pack of Jelly Babies. You will be dazzled by the color. Brightness aside, the site works well and provides an easy way to sort and manage friends and followers. Being able to sort by date added or last tweet makes this one of the most useful follower management tools around.

Other tools to consider include:

TweetBuddy Prune - an easy way to find those not following you and unfollow them

FriendOrFollow - see a snapshot of the people you are following who are not following you back, then click on an avatar to unfollow.

MyCleenr - easily clean out your friends list (but you must have fewer than 700 friends)

Which tools have you found effective in managing Twitter followers?

It’s amazing the number of sites that have been created to help manage Twitter. There are so many to choose from. It’s hard to find the right ones, but in my experience I just try them out and if they don’t fulfill a need I never use it again. Great list above, I will have to check out the ones I haven’t tried before.
