Skimmer - Skim Your Social Media Accounts

As we move more of our lives online, we increasingly look for easy ways to manage our online interactions. One application that offers to help us do that is Skimmer, and Adobe AIR application. After installation, there’s a one page form where you register, choose a username and input your social media credentials. You can use Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and Blogger, but only one account for each site. If you are managing multiple accounts, then this is a failing.
The default view shows updates from all your linked accounts. You can see clearly which service updates have come from and who has posted the update. You can also look at media inline, making it easy to keep track of social media updates without leaving the site. Click on the plus sign at the side of an update to see other options for interacting with content. For example, with Twitter updates you can reply, retweet and send direct messages without ever leaving the site.
Useful Features
Even more useful are the filtering features, which allow you to segment your stream by service, by friend groups (you can divide your contacts into different groups) or search by keyword. I didn’t have much luck searching for hashtags, but otherwise the search features worked well.
You can also customize your homepage, so that your contacts see your latest photos, videos and Twitter updates. I couldn’t find a way to add my Facebook updates to this view. In addition, you can change the color palette. Other cool features include the ability to upload to Youtube and Flickr from within the application.
The Verdict
While Skimmer is an attractive way of viewing your stream, it’s probably best for those who operate only a few social media accounts. If you try lots of new accounts, or manage more than one Twitter or Facebook account, then you’d be better off with another lifestreaming tool.
