Getwapps - An Advanced Visual Start Page with Meebo Integration
Posted by admin on August 11th, 2010
Getwapps is pretty much a visual start page that can be organized into quick lists. You can add your own websites or choose from the many that they have in the Wapps Store. Most Wapp link to the associated external website (in a new tab) and displays either a screenshot of logo for the specific site. Some Wapps (like those for search engines) let you enter text on the site and then opens up your results in a new page.
In their own words, it’s a “central place for discovering, organizing and accessing web applications”. You can either sign up with Getwapps directly or use your Facebook account.
Quick lists are easy to create and customizable. You can name your list and also edit and move around your icons. Wapps can also be edited (title, URL, description, image). You can choose to have it show a screenshot of the site or another image.

While quick lists display as icons, the mini list displays as text link list. You only get one mini list and it is displayed on the side of the page. You simply enter a link to add a new site to it. As stated above, the Wapps Store has a large selection and you can even suggest web apps if you can’t find what you’re looking for. When adding apps from the store you get to choose which quick list to add it to or you can create a new list on the fly.
Another great addition to Getwapps is the Meebo bar integration. If you’re not familiar with this, it lets you chat with your friends on AIM, Yahoo, MSN, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MySpace and Facebook. The bar is displayed on the bottom of the page for easy access. This feature can be turned on or off via the settings page.
Also included in the Meebo bar is a unique sharing feature that lets you share the current page on one of your IM services or Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, Yahoo updates or by email.
I’m a huge fan of visual start pages; I’ve tried just about all of them. So, I can honestly say that Getwapps has definitely been added to my list of favorites. It’s stylish, gives you access to all of your favorite sites, plus lets you chat with your friends. How could you not love it?
