Apps - What's The Alternative?

This post has been submitted by Sharon Hurley Hall from Get Paid To Write Online.com.

Have you ever really liked an application, only to find that you couldn’t use it anymore because:

  • you upgraded your computer
  • they changed the license agreement
  • the site went bust

If this has ever happened to you, then there’s an easy way to find a replacement programme. It’s called AlternativeTo. As the name suggests, this site provides alternatives to popular applications so that you can easily find a replacement. Who knows, you may even find something better.

Two tabbed interfaces are at the heart of the AlternativeTo website. Across the top of the page are banners which allow you to filter Mac, Windows, Linux and online applications or see all. Then, further down the page, you can view your selections by most views, most likes, recent or no alternatives.

Click on the name of an app to take you to a description page which also lists alternatives, comments and likes and shows recent Twitter mentions. Click on the tags beneath each application listing to sort in a different way. You can sign in with OpenId or Facebook Connect to add your vote, update information or offer additional alternatives.

The search does not always work well (it took me three tries to find the page with anti-virus applications), but other than that, I like both the concept of the site and the way it works. Plus you can have fun finding the best liked apps in different categories. Firefox is currently at the top of the list, with Gmail a close second.
