Planning Your Blog’s First Ad Campaign
Posted by Patrick on October 7th, 2007
PiggyBankPie.com is currently running 3 ad campaigns on 3 different blogs. Interestingly, the cheapest ad we’ve purchased (at $20), is the one that has had the best impact so far, bringing more traffic than the two others combined ($255). Here’s why it work so well.
If you’re in the market for buying advertisement space to promote your new blog and you do not want to immerse yourself into the AdWords jungle, you may want to consider the following guidelines. For me they’ve proven good results.
Note: I would not recommend this technique for promoting affiliates products. In this case, big players offer much better visibility and potentially lead to more sales.
- Don’t play the big league yet. At first you’d think advertising in the big league would bring you good traffic. That is true if you get yourself a prime spot, but you’ll also slash out hundreds or dollars from your bank account. If you are on tight budget, a different game plan might be a better strategy.

- Find the best fit. This is the most important advice I’d give you. Finding the best place to advertise is not an easy task. Browse the Blogosphere and try to find that small detail that would naturally make readers and your ad collide.
- Small communities support themselves. In a small town, everyone knows everyone. It gossips, true, but also creates very dynamic communities. Read smaller blogs, look at the comments and join the group. Then if you sponsor an ad, readers will naturally be tempted to visit your site.
- Try incentives. This technique is used by more and more bloggers. And some are throwing really nice and pricy gifts to increase their RSS stats. However, a free gift is a free gift, and it’s nice. If I join a new blog community and win a book from Amazon, trust me I’ll be happy. And chances are, others will be.
My best fit (so far) is bloggerjobs.biz. Freelance bloggers go to this site to find blogging gigs. Here’s how the above strategy worked for me.
- They are perfect in size to fit in the above strategy (Alexa rank of 215,832.)
- Freelance Bloggers go there to find gigs… and I am offering gigs! Kind of a good match.
- Bloggers who saw my ad on the front page of bloggerjobs.biz took the story and blogged about it. This is free publicity. And it is why I say small communities support themselves. As I am doing now by indirectly promoting bloggerjobs.biz by blogging about my experience with them.
- As for the incentive, point your browser to bloggerjobs.biz and look for it.
If you have had success with similar advertising strategies, please drop a comment. I’d love to get more feedback on that subject.
