Viral Video Competition

Last week I was contacted by one of the organizers behind what looks to be a great new competition… designing a viral ad for Webtel.mobi, a new low cost way to make national or international calls via your mobile phone. The service hasn’t been released but does look be very easy to use and quite a saving on current international calls.

As part of their launch Webtel.mobi want you to create a viral video that’ll spread through the web just like wildfire. The prizes are substantial - $20,000 for the overall winner along with a trip to the Awards Ceremony in Cannes - and currently there do seem to only be 4 video entries.

The videos will be judged by a panel according to three criteria:

  • How likely the video is to be shared and passed on by viewers
  • How effectively the content communicates the benefits of using webtel.mobi
  • How well the content will work with an international audience

So can you create an instant YouTube hit? It may well be worth a go considering the number of entries that have currently been submitted. Entries are open until 10th July.

It’ll be interesting to see how successful the competition is in generating interest. Personally I would have looked to host the competition on the Webtel.mobi site, perhaps offering free calls and texts to all entrants alongside a ‘refer-a-friend’ scheme.

Webtel.mobi are potentially missing out on a lot of incoming links which Zoopa will benefit from instead - bordering on linkbait for Zoopa. ‘International Cheap Calls’ and similar terms have high search volumes which this competition could have gone a long way towards laying the foundations for Webtel.mobi to rank for.

At the end of the competition we may try to set up an interview with one of the organizers to see how successful the competition was in generating participants and awareness, and in the meantime if you do enter the competition feel free to add a link to your video in the comments below.
