PayPal: The Internet Currency

For anyone wanting to make money online, a PayPal account is essential. It is quicker and easier than checks, and you save paper since everything is done online. Almost all places offer payments through PayPal, and the ones that do, prefer it. A PayPal account also makes it easy to keep track of your online income, which comes in handy at tax time!paypal.gif

It is important that when you sign up for a (free) PayPal account that you use your real name, making sure that it matches the name on the bank account that the money will be transferred too. If you don’t, either PayPal or your bank could reject the transfer and you will get charged a fee. Note: When entering a bank account/debt card you will need your bank’s routing numbers, you can get these numbers by calling the bank and asking for them.

You are almost ready to start receiving money with your PayPal account, but first you must verify your bank account. I suggest getting this done right away, especially if you are going to sell on eBay and stuff like that. To verify your account PayPal will make two small deposits into the account(s). When I say small, I mean small, like 0.09 and 0.05. To finish the onlinemoney.gifprocess you must log into your account and enter the amount of the deposits, then you are verified.

If you have good credit you could get a PayPal debt card, this is better because when you are transferring money to a bank account, it can take up to four days. With the debt card, it is instant. If you sell on eBay you can sign up to have PayPal as your “preferred payment method” and earn a percentage when people pay you using PayPal. They also have a few other “cash back” programs, and come up with new ones every now and then.

To me the best part of PayPal is that for someone with no credit, it can help you build it. When I first got my account I had no credit (no credit is worse than bad credit), no one would give me a credit card. I thought my own bank would since I have had an account with them since I was nine, but nope. However, after a few months of receiving money through them I got a pre-approved for a credit card. I knew it had to come from PayPal because of how the name was written (the same as my PayPal account, I only had an initial for my first name).

Yeah there are other “money transferring services” online such as egold, xoom, obopay, etc… but PayPal has been around for a while and is a sister company to eBay. This, to some, gives it more creditability. Of course, not everyone likes PayPal, hence, www.paypalsucks.com. This websites lists all the problems that PayPal customers have run into. However, I wonder how true it is since they are advertising for another company. I have never had a problem with PayPal, and any issues I may have had were resolved every time I have dealt with their customer service.

Here is another ‘down with PayPal’ website, www.paypalwarning.com.

Anyone using another payment service? I’ve been using PayPal for the past 4 years I think… But I’m just curious to get feedback from alternatives.

I’m using Paypal right now, but some other services will be coming up, including Google Checkout services. Google Checkout is currently only available for merchants in the US with SSN or business numbers or whatever, so I do not have access to use it. Currently they do not charge any fees for receiving money, while Paypal merchants cough up 2.9% (or lower based on volume) in fees. I pay those fees too, but compared to the hassle of having to receive and deposit cheques, I prefer it.

For other financial transactions I also use the Interac Money transfer - only costs $1.50 flat per transaction (with a $1,000 limit per transfer) so it’s a lot cheaper than Paypal.

I did not know that about Google Checkout. Everyone thank Jeff, thank you!lol

Google checkout will soon dominate. The percentage they will be taking away will be a fraction of what Paypal takes away, and merchants using Google Adsense as well as Google checkout will have a small shopping cart icon appearing on their Adsense Ads, which means that people will prefer ones with Google checkout once this is widespread. They are hoping to launch this worldwide next year I believe. I’m so excited - 2.9% is a lot of money to pay to Paypal! :(

PayPal will make two small deposits into the account.
    0.06 and 0.07.

My PayPal has been limited several times! But, I got it restored when I submitted my Credit Card statements and ID Proofs!
