The Joy Of Blogging

This post has been submitted by Sharon Hurley Hall from Get Paid To Write Online.com.I love blogging. I have done since I started my first blog in 2005. At the time I had no idea what I was doing. Nor did I know that it was the start of an obsession. However, within three months, I had started four other blogs, some of which are still going today. So why do I blog?

Community

One of the things I love most about blogging is meeting other bloggers. Through my second blog, on a now defunct site, I met several people that I’m still in touch with today. These included:

  • someone who worked in publishing and offered me work
  • someone who works with me and is an excellent writer
  • several writing colleagues
  • a networking expert
  • a creative writing group

All of these relationships have added richness to my life - and some of them have put money in my pocket as well.

Feedback

Another great aspect of blogging is that you get instant feedback on the things you write. If you’re lucky, you get plenty of comments, which tell you that people find your writing interesting. At other times, they may submit a post to one of the social sites, which means that they thought it was worth sharing with others. Even if you don’t get comments, you can check your stats to see how much attention a particular post is getting. And of course, your post may be quoted on someone else’s blog.

Money

I’m a freelance writer, so writing is something I do both for love and for money. Blogging is the best of both worlds, because I enjoy writing as though I’m talking to someone, and I enjoy having a healthy bank balance. Not everyone is lucky enough to get paid for what they love, so I am thankful.

So there you have it. Three reasons why I take joy in blogging. What gives you joy in your blogging life?

It actually came as a surprise to me when I realised that I actually love writing, all thanks to this wonderful world of blogging. It’s really enjoyable to be able to write about anything, received responses from people I don’t even know (knowing that people read my posts is actually quite an ecstasy by itself :) ), interact with them and then become friends.. Those are the main things that give me joy in blogging.

Makes me feel guilty if I don’t update my blog :)

You are right about that. The thrill of writing and getting feedback from readers is amazing.

I get lots of joy when looking at the growing stats of this blog, and also, from guest blogging gig. My last one on ProBlogger.net was really amazing with more than 80 comments, it was quite a thrill. Yes, when the joy of blogging strikes you, you really feel proud of what you have built… out of a simple blog.

    Thanks for commenting, Yus.

Yes, I agree. Even when you write for a living, blogging is a way to rediscover your love of writing. Thanks for commenting, Awangku.

I agree too. A very close friend of mine is a writer and what he writes in magazines is completely different from what he writes in his blog, where he is more passionate. There’s also joy in that I always poke fun at him after reading his posts, which is something that cannot be done in magazines :)

Thank you for those kind words.

Sharon, do call me Yus. Awangku is just a title :)

Yus, I used to love the thrill of seeing my name in print, but I found that I hardly ever got positive feedback. With blogging, you get both feedback and good ideas.
