How To Make Your Blog Work For You

So you’ve got a blog - what are you going to do with it? More importantly, how are you going to make money from your blog? There are two basic ways that you can make money from your blog - and today I’m going to talk about the first one - content.

Look at any successful blog and you will find that they all have one thing in common - great content. It’s not a question of writing about a particular topic; it’s more a case of writing something that other people want to read. This could be anything. Zoe Margolis wrote about her bedroom exploits in Girl With A One Track Mind, spawning a book and a very lucrative career. Darren Rowse writes about problogging. Deb Ng writes about writing.

All of these blogs appeal because they fill a need for readers. Whether it’s to be entertained, to find out about tools that will make you a better blogger, or to get a writing job, they provide the information that readers want. By doing that they get readers, comments and more readers.

But there’s something else that those blogs do - they show off the bloggers’ skills. That’s why well known bloggers often get more blogging gigs, advertising income, book contracts and more. And you can do it too.

All you need to do is stop thinking of your blog as a personal playground and take it seriously. I have two major blogs. One of them, Get Paid To Write Online, is a blog where I give of my best. I try to make the content useful and relevant. The other is a playground, where there is very little focus. Guess which one I show to clients to give evidence of my writing skills? Guess which one attracts links and comments?

My blog is like a portfolio. It says that I can write and it shows off my subject knowledge. This has got me writing jobs and it has got people jobs in other fields. Whatever topic you pick for your blog, you can do the same. However, remember that you can’t do it alone. A key part of blogging is interacting with other bloggers. Link to them and they’ll link to you - and your blog will be working for you. Then you’ll be able to find other ways to make money from blogging.
