Are You Being Kind To Your Readers?

When you start a new blog it can be difficult to see past the mechanics of getting it running. Finding the perfect template and crafting the perfect post can take a lot of time. However, although good content is essential for any successful blog, there’s not much point in having it if no one is reading. Here are some tips for keeping readers happy and involved in your blog.
Choosing The Template
Even though the search for the right template can be a never-ending task, some features will make your blog more appealing to readers. For example, make sure that it’s easy for readers to see your content. There should be enough contrast between the background and the text so that readers can avoid eyestrain. A clean, uncluttered blog theme will make it easy for readers to see your content and will keep them coming back for more.
Keep It Simple
When writing your blog’s content, remember that you’re having a conversation, but that conversation is with the whole world and not everyone speaks your language. Avoid jargon and keep sentences simple, clear and active. Pretend that you’re talking to someone who’s in the same room. This will give you a great blogging style and will make your readers want to stick around.
Monetize Wisely
Even if you want to make money from your blog, you don’t have to do it at readers’ expense. If your posts and sidebar are cluttered with ads, this will be a big turnoff for your readers, especially if the ads are not related to your content. There’s no rule that says that you have to try all the blog advertising companies at once. Instead, be selective and choose those that will add value for your readers. Not only will you avoid alienating your audience, but you will make more money as a result.
Following The Conversation
There’s nothing more annoying than commenting on a blog and not knowing how the conversation turned out. It’s a bit like leaving a party early. With a blogging party, you can make it easy for your readers to catch up on the gossip. The best way to do this is by using a plug-in such as Subscribe to Comments. This allows readers to tick a box to keep track of the conversation by email. When you use this plug-in people may even leave multiple comments on the same post – they do on my blog.
If you use these strategies you will make it easy for readers to buy into your blog and create a vibrant blogging community

I often wonder how many people comment on blogs during surfing marathons and then forget what they said and where. Nice article.

Excellent advice, Sharon, especially Subscribe to Comments. Although there are a couple of programs to track comments you leave on other blogs, they haven’t worked well for me. I much prefer to subscribe to comments so I don’t have to remember where I commented and look for responses.

Used to happen to me all the time, Malcolm, which is why I love the fact that more people are using plugins of this type. I am selective about which threads I subscribe to, in the interests of avoiding inbox clutter.

Yes, I’ve tried those too, Lillie, and had a similar experience.
