Guest Blogging can be quite challenging, but also quite rewarding. When preparing for guest blogging there are several important things to keep in mind. If you want to be an effective guest blogger and “guest blog like a champion today,” than simply having extensive knowledge on the topic is never good enough. That being said, I have compiled a nice list of six important things that should be at the forefront of any guest blogger’s mind.
1. Research and understanding is key
If you’re being asked to guest blog on someone’s site, chances are you’re well versed in the topic. However, it never hurts to put in a little extra research. Understanding the topic is important, but even more important is being able to explain it well. An English professor once told me that you don’t truly understand a subject until you are able to explain it so that almost anyone else can understand it. Remember that when guest blogging. As for the research, although it may seem arduous, you might even learn something new. If you are blogging about a topic that is only vaguely familiar to you, then research is paramount. When reading anything, it’s pretty obvious if the writer has no idea what he or she is talking about. Avoid looking unprepared by doing some Google searches, and definitely peruse the blog you’ll be writing for. When I was writing for CurrencyTrading, I had to learn a lot more about the subject (Forex). I simply read every post on CT.net I could find, and did my own searching on the Internet. After a few weeks, I felt qualified to write some in depth posts.
2. Know the readers
Different people visit different blogs for varying reasons. The readers of one blog may not be the same as readers of another blog. It is essential to know the audience of the particular blog you’re writing for. If the readers are well versed on the topics, don’t be afraid to get technical. However, if the readers aren’t as well versed, then it might be a good idea to write things in layman’s terms. The best way to figure out what kind of readers a blog has is to simply look at past posts.
3. Give the webmaster what he/she wants
This may seem like a no-brainer, but one of the biggest pitfalls of guest bloggers is not following requests. If the Webmaster wants you to not include any links, or write about a special topic, then do it. Once, while guest blogging for CurrencyTrading.net, I made the mistake of not including something that they specifically asked me to include in the post, and I made it much shorter than was expected. Of course, my post was rejected. Ever since then, I learned that you need to read exactly what they want you to write about, and then do it!
4. Don’t hesitate to add a little flare
Guest blogging exists for a reason. Often times, bloggers want to add a little something different to their sites. Readers might get bored after reading one writing style in post after post. Also, guest bloggers serve to give a different perspective on topics. What it means for you, the potential guest blogger, is that you should never be afraid to bring your own unique writing style to the table. After all, adding a little flare never hurts. Have fun while writing your post. If you’ve been given the opportunity to write about a subject that you know quite a bit about, you should take advantage of it!
5. Proofread like it’s a Senior Thesis you’re turning in
Maybe you don’t have to take the post quite that seriously, but the point is that a little proofreading goes a long way. Clicking spell-check and being done with it is a mistake that far too many bloggers make. Actually take the time to read your post, ask for a second opinion. If you know someone who has knowledge on the subject, ask for suggestions. Posts that are written hastily, and that have glaring mistakes are sure to be rejected. Avoid it entirely by thoroughly checking your work.
6. Take pride in your work
If you are guest blogging, the best results can often come when you ask yourself a simple question. “Would I like to see this post on my blog.” Essentially, put the same amount of effort into a guest post as you would a post for your own web site. A little effort can go a long way, and the results will certainly pay off. If you gain a reputation of providing high quality posts, than bloggers will most likely want you to post again.
Guest blogging isn’t rocket science. In fact, much of the time you are writing about topics with which you are already familiar. The biggest key to guest blogging is simply to be thorough in all facets of the post. If you do that, then guest blogging will come easily. It took me some time to get it right, so don’t be discouraged if a few posts are rejected. To be the best, you often have to learn from mistakes. However, following these six pieces of advice should put you well on your way to mistake-free, successful guest blogging.
